If you've ever felt like retirement should feel busier than it does — or like your days are completely full, but somehow not with anything that's yours — you're not imagining it, and you're not alone. It turns out there's real research behind both of those feelings, and a surprisingly small amount of paid work seems to be the fix.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge and the University of Salford tracked more than 70,000 people in the UK over almost a decade, watching what happened to their mental health and life satisfaction as their working hours changed. The finding that got everyone's attention: when people moved from unemployment or full-time stay-at-home parenting into paid work of eight hours or less a week, their risk of mental health problems dropped by an average of 30%.
Working more than that? Barely made a difference. The researchers described roughly one day a week as the "effective dose" of work for wellbeing — comparing it to a vitamin, where more isn't better, it's just more. As the study's co-author, Cambridge sociologist Senhu Wang, put it: the traditional 40-hour work week "was never based on how much work was good for people." Micro-jobs, it turns out, deliver almost the same psychological benefit as full-time ones.
The researchers point to a few things paid work provides that don't show up on a payslip: a reason to leave the house, a small amount of structure in the day, a sense of being useful to someone else, and a bit of social contact that doesn't come from family alone. For people who've stepped back from a career — whether that's retirement or years spent raising kids — those things can quietly go missing, even when life is otherwise full and financially comfortable.
That shows up clearly in separate research on retirement specifically. A study of nearly 2,000 adults found that fully retired people reported a significantly lower sense of purpose than people who were still working. Interestingly, the same research found that partially retired people didn't just sit in the middle — they reported some of the strongest links between staying active and feeling a sense of purpose, stronger than either the fully retired or the still-fully-working groups. In other words: a little bit of work may do more for a sense of purpose than either doing none, or doing all of it.
This isn't just a UK phenomenon. Local data tells a very similar story:
None of this is an argument for going back to full-time work, or feeling like you should be doing more. If anything, it's the opposite — the research suggests the answer isn't "more," it's "a little." A few hours a week doing something you're actually good at may do more for how you feel than either doing nothing, or doing too much.
If you've got a skill sitting unused — bookkeeping, tutoring, gardening, cleaning, IT help, or something more specialised — that's exactly the gap Greatjob exists to fill. Setting up a casual, flexible listing takes minutes, you set your own hours, and there's no pressure to turn it into anything more than it needs to be.
Curious what a few hours a week could look like for you? Get in touch and we'll help you get started.

Our advise is for you to set an hourly rate you are happy with. If you are still not sure what to start with, we suggest going to the Australian Government Fair Work page which shows the minimum award wage for casual work . On the page, click on Pay Calculator, select "I'm an employee looking for pay rates", press "Next" and follow the prompts. Awards are categories of jobs. If you can't find the Award for your casual job, use the "Miscellaneous Award". Dog Walkers and Babysitters/Nannies fall into the Miscellaneous Award.
